Buying A Home - Do You Need To Check The Exterior Wood?

by Christy Lyons

Before committing to the purchase of a house, you need to be very careful. If there is wood on the exterior of the house, then you need to consider the following issues.

Wood is considered to be a beautiful material especially if it's used on the home's exterior. Compared to other materials like stucco, you sometimes wonder why wood isn't used more often. Wood simply doesn't hold up as well as the other man made materials. Here are a few things to watch out for when evaluating the opportunity when you're looking for a home that has a heavy emphasis on the exterior wood siding, trim, etc.

The appearance of wood having almost no relevance to the condition is the first thing you need to realize. Infested by termites or rotting is a perfectly good looking piece of wood trim, but just by glancing at it, this is something you may overlook. When you're inspecting wood exteriors, it would be a good idea to not rely solely on your eyes.

When it comes to wood, degradation is one of the biggest issues. Make sure to physically touch the wood when you're looking at particular areas. It would even be best if you give it a fairly good poke with a finger. You need to look for soft areas. If there are soft areas, then one way or another these would indicate rot. You may find rot throughout the structure which means that if you find rot in one area, then you should be very concerned. In other words, it may be a good idea to look at other homes on your list.

It can be troubling to find soft spots in wood but there's something worse. Run for the care if you poke or squeeze a piece of wood and dust or bits fall off. This type of degradation is often a sign of termite problems. For any prospective home, termite problems should be a huge red flag. If you buy the house, you are going to have to tent it to kill the bugs and pay to inspect and repair the damage done by the evil little bugs. A minor but expensive nightmare is what you're buying.

On the exterior of the home, wood can be very attractive. Just make sure you don't rely solely on a visual inspection of it when deciding on the merits of the house.
